Overview

Lunchly is a meal kit that was released in September 2024 by notorious YouTube content creators Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast), Logan Paul, and JJ Olatunji (KSI). All kits include Donaldson’s Feastables chocolate bar, Paul and Olatunji’s Prime hydration drink and either a pizza, nacho or turkey and cracker meal. The company, which is advertised as a healthier alternative to Lunchables, faced scrutiny upon hitting the shelves after dietary experts questioned its nutritional value and consumers found mold in its products.

While Lunchly’s kits look slightly healthier than the Lunchables counterparts it mimicked, doctors and dieticians noted that the nutritional differences are so minimal that highlighting the fact is more of a marketing tactic rather than marking a significant health benefit.

As for the mold situation, consumers speculated that the quality of the glue which sealed the cover on the kit may have been to blame, though that was never confirmed by Lunchly.

Responses

In response to these criticisms, the trio took to their social media platforms to defend the company.

Donaldson wrote on X that while Lunchly does not replace eating fresh foods, having a healthier alternative to premade lunches is a “net good.” However, he did not comment on the mold.

Paul was more harsh with his responses on X, going so far to call a doctor an “idiot” for making assumptions about the nutritional makeup of the included Prime drink, as well as insinuate that fellow YouTuber Rosanna Pansino was an “attention hungry little clout goblin” for reporting that mold was present in her Lunchly.

Olatunji took to his YouTube channel to mock and laugh at critics in a reaction video, a move that many Redditors found cringey.

Conclusions

As faces of the company, it would be expected that more thought would be put into reassuring the consumer that Lunchly was handling these claims seriously, especially since it creates food products for younger demographics. Except for Donaldson’s post, many of the other responses failed to display professionalism, respect, accountability, transparency and honesty.

These ethical values should not be devalued over a quick internet clap-back. Lunchly is an example of a brand that lacks a distinguishable ethical framework.

The controversies could have been handled better if Lunchly, not its individual founders, released official statements with consideration to its ethical duties and actively engaged in open dialogue with its consumers.
